Their core function is to physically secure the rear end of a truck (typically its rear impact guard/RIG or wheels) to the dock throughout the entire loading and unloading process, preventing unintended vehicle departure (trailer creep / trailer separation).

 

Why Is Matching Installation Mandatory?

When forklifts enter trailers to load or unload goods, weight shifting will trigger trailer lift—where the front of the trailer rises and the rear drops. This breaks the overlap between the dock leveler lip and trailer floor, creating a severe risk of forklifts falling out of the trailer.
Catastrophic accidents can also occur if drivers accidentally start the vehicle during handling, or if insufficient handbrake tension causes trailer rollaway.
Simply put, dock levelers address the question of access to the trailer, while truck restraints guarantee safety once access is established.
 

Interlock Control Logic with Dock Levelers (Core Safety Mechanism)
Truck restraints do not operate as standalone units. They must be hardwired to the electric control system of dock levelers, with electrical signals enforcing the following mandatory operational logic.

Step 1: 

Vehicle Docking

The driver reverses to the dock until the rear wheels or RIG contacts the restraint position detection switch (mechanical limit switch or ultrasonic sensor).Before the restraint is locked, the dock leveler cannot initiate any operation (control panel buttons are inactive, PLC refuses execution).

Step 2: 

Restraint Engagement

The operator (or driver via dock-side button) presses the "Lock" button. The restraint arm raises to engage the RIG, or a chock engages the wheel. A lock-in-position signal (limit switch triggered) is sent to the PLC.Only when the lock-in-position signal is valid is the dock leveler permitted to execute the full sequence: Raise → Lip Extension → Lower.
Step 3: Loading/Unloading OperationThe dock leveler operates normally, with forklifts entering and exiting the trailer.The restraint remains locked throughout the entire handling process. If locking pressure drops (hydraulic system leakage) or position shifts (limit switch disengages), the PLC must immediately trigger an audible and visual alarm, but must NOT 主动 release the restraint (to prevent forklift fall hazards from premature release).

Step 4: 

Operation Complete, Restraint Release

The dock leveler first retracts its lip and returns to the stored position, after which the PLC permits the restraint to perform the "release" action.The restraint is prohibited from unlocking until the lip is fully retracted to the stored position. This prevents the driver from departing while the lip is still resting on the trailer, which would bend or break the lip.

 

Compliance Requirement: All the above interlock logic shall be fully implemented via hardwiring (safety relay circuits), and must not rely solely on PLC software logic. In the event of PLC software failure (system crash or program runaway), the hardwired safety circuit shall still prevent the hazardous condition of "dock leveler lip engaged while truck restraint released" under worst-case scenarios.
